【AREIA REMIX 032】Lee Hyori (이효리) – Swing (그네)

The first time I’ve heard Lee Hyori’s new song I was totally out of breath. In these times, that most popular Korean songs have shallow and simple meanings, Hyori chooses to risk her success and go with a much deeper concept. In my oppinion, the resulting compination of the song and the video is an unmistakable masterpiece. Full of deep symbols, emotional sounds and crispy lyrics, it allows the listeners building up their own experience out of the song. I saw some major Korean websites incorectly catecorizing this song as hip-hop, probably because of the rap part (that’s there to indroduce the song to the masses) but that’s completely naive and non-sense as the song’s main elements clearly come from a completely different genre. One that I’m not just familiar with but a genre that’s a fundamental part of my life, myself and my stereotypes as is one of the most popular genres at my birthplace – Greece. That airy guitar, the romantic blues/rock rhythm with the characteristic emotional instruments – like trumpets – and travelling chorus vocals… In such songs the driving rhythm feels like seawaves (symbolizing past memories), filling the sandy beach in and out. It took me a while though to get used to listen to such a song with Korean lyrics. Korean pop music has always been a satellite of western (and especially American) pop and I’m glad to hear something that deviates from that. It’s not like this is something particullary new but it’s usually attempted from less famous

Message From Cilnark Check out my new video release this summer of the song Its True which is a song on my Journey to Foreign album featuring Hawaiian/Jamaican songstress, Irie Love. It was filmed in the UK on location outside our Studio in Leyton East London UK in July last year. We also filmed at South End Beach – it was so cold in the morning in May this year, thankfully the day brightened up and we finished the day in Jubilee Park, Edmonton London. Thanks to Chris Cargill, Director, Editor Jesse Bamfro and Lee Tarrier of DOF Films for this production, as we met them last year as film students, after our first project ‘Life in the Ghetto’ music video, they are developing well. Thanks also to camera man Tony Blackwood who filmed some of the footage. And all the people in the video who managed to turn up on the day at short notice and of course Henry ‘Buttons’ Denyue, on the Trombone who travelled from the coast on the day. Special thanks to my manager, Juliet Edwards who pulled everything together or despite suffering from a serious illness for 3 years, and holding down a day job, thank God shes well now.
