How does the hiring process differ for contract positions than permanent ones?

Question by ellieoshkosh: How does the hiring process differ for contract positions than permanent ones?
Is the hiring generally done more quickly, do they always have the intention of having the person start immediately, and are they generally less concerned about “soft skills” than permanent positions are? I guess they aren’t investing as much in an employee (except more money, lol). Permanent positions can sometimes takes weeks or months to fill – can I except that a contract position will make a decision more quickly? I’m looking into a great 1 year+ contract at the moment. Just wondering what I can expect if I just initiated the process today.

In my experience, there is little difference between the two processes. You could make the argument that hiring for person full time CAN be a bit more exhaustive, it it’s being done with the idea in mind that the person is going to be a permanent addition to the company versus a contract employee who may be gone after 3-6 months.

Also, contract employees are usually brought on board with the idea of handling one set project or providing a select skill set. So the process of hiring a contract employee might be a little more streamlined in that regard as well.
