How to I leave my record deal?

Question by Martin C: How to I leave my record deal?
I’ve been signed to a record label for 4 years and the contract expires in June but has two one-year options. I don’t want to continue but the label does. In the contract it states that the contract will be renewed “under both parties consent”. The contract is a 4-year 3 album deal but we’ve only recorded 1 album (the label’s fault, not mine) and we are about to release a second album. I’ve had very little support though from them and feel it would be wise to continue on my own. Any advice?
If I choose not to take the options and walk away in June, this isn’t the same as terminating my deal early – is it?

Regardless, you are in breach of your contract and could be liable. Get a lawyer…or I am sure your label will use that against you to get you to renew or simply ask for all monies back that you received…
