Q&A: Why aren’t record labels doing anything to stop file sharing?

Question by ck: Why aren’t record labels doing anything to stop file sharing?
Commercial file sharing websites, like Megaupload, 4shared, rapidshare, etc have so many copyrighted content being uploaded everyday, such as an album. I’m wondering why record companies don’t take any action against them? Is it because it can’t really be stopped?

If so, does downloading music free or buying it comes down to an ethical point of view?

If those sites are hosted in a country where file sharing is legal, there is nothing they can do to shut them down.

And even if they were able to shut them down, two more would pop up for each one they shut down.

File sharing gained speed mainly due to stupidity by the music industry and now that the cat is out of the bag, nothing is going to stuff it back in again.

I really don’t feel much sorrow for the music industry. They operated on greed, and sooner or later, that is a fail.
